Burnt Friedman

[EN – Original ] Burnt Friedman is one of Germany’s most long established and highly rated artists in the field of music with a career spanning over 40 years. He was born in Coburg, Germany in 1965, has lived in Cologne and Berlin until he moved to Porto in 2020.

After initially being a student of fine arts in Kassel, Germany, Burnt started to focus on music exclusively from the 80s onwards. He went on to attend the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne as a postgraduate student and began to publish his musical works around the early 1990s. From there he progressed to various notable music collaborations throughout the 90s on projects with the likes of Jaki Liebezeit, Hayden Chisholm, Root70, Atom™(as Flanger), Steve Jansen, David Sylvian (as Nine Horses) and most recently João Pais Filipe.

In 2000 Friedman launched his own record label, Nonplace, with 53 releases to date. Working under the solo artist name of Burnt Friedman, he sought to address the prejudices people had then about the authenticity of programmed music.

His studio and on-stage partnership with Jaki Liebezeit dated 17 years. Together they consciously distanced the music from the formulas of Western European and Anglo-American culture. Their “Secret Rhythms“ serie shed light on the laws of rhythm and addressed mis–conceptions in the understanding of rhythm in common Western theory.

“It’s as Burnt Friedman he joined forces with Jaki Liebezeit, the legendary drummer for the penultimate avant–garde rock group Can for five albums as the Secret Rhythms series before Liebezeit’s untimely passing in 2017. Using a universal numbering system rather than track titles, the music was laid bare with little by way of subjective influence from the artist informing the listening experience. The music is free thus to exist in its nonplace, not even bound by the identity of the artists involved.” (Jaeger/Oslo)

[PT] Burnt Friedman é um dos artistas mais estabelecidos e bem avaliados da Alemanha no campo da música, com uma carreira que abrange mais de 40 anos. Nascido em Coburg, Alemanha, em 1965, viveu em Colônia e Berlim antes de se mudar para o Porto em 2020.

Após iniciar seus estudos em belas artes em Kassel, Alemanha, Burnt começou a focar exclusivamente na música a partir dos anos 80. Posteriormente, frequentou a Academia de Artes Midiáticas em Colônia como estudante de pós-graduação e começou a publicar suas obras musicais no início dos anos 1990. A partir daí, desenvolveu várias colaborações musicais significativas durante os anos 90 em projetos com artistas como Jaki Liebezeit, Hayden Chisholm, Root70, Atom™ (como Flanger), Steve Jansen, David Sylvian (como Nine Horses) e, mais recentemente, João Pais Filipe.

Em 2000, Friedman lançou sua própria gravadora, Nonplace, com 53 lançamentos até à data. Sob o nome artístico de Burnt Friedman, procurou abordar os preconceitos das pessoas sobre a autenticidade da música programada.

Sua parceria de estúdio e palco com Jaki Liebezeit durou 17 anos. Juntos, distanciaram conscientemente a música das fórmulas da cultura anglo-americana e europeia ocidental. A série “Secret Rhythms” lançou luz sobre as leis do ritmo e abordou equívocos na compreensão do ritmo na teoria musical ocidental comum.

“Foi como Burnt Friedman que se uniu a Jaki Liebezeit, o lendário baterista do penúltimo grupo de rock avant-garde Can, para cinco álbuns da série Secret Rhythms, antes do falecimento precoce de Liebezeit em 2017. Utilizando um sistema de numeração universal em vez de títulos de faixas, a música foi apresentada de forma nua, com pouca influência subjetiva do artista na experiência auditiva.
