[PT] Como parte de uma longa investigação em andamento sobre a natureza do groove, Burnt Friedman une-se ao Drumming GP para uma performance conjunta de quatro peças. Eles desviam o foco das conotações culturais da música para o princípio animador, os vetores fenomenológicos do ritmo e veem o “groove” apenas como o atributo intrínseco dos padrões de movimento harmónico regular.

Num esforço de compor um caminho guia, esta colaboração ativa um princípio formulaico baseado na lei da oitava (dobrar e reduzir pela metade).

Não artificial, mas sim fórmula rítmica atribuída, sempre circular em oposição a linear ou progressiva, e baseada exclusivamente na oitava. Tal fórmula é derivada de um movimento corporal recorrente e equilibrado, do qual se origina todo o impulso como algo sentido, sem estar sujeito à vontade ou notação. O que, na teoria, poderá soar como pormenor meramente técnico ou sofisticado, acaba, na prática, por ser basilar. Este princípio formulaico (também conhecido como o ‘código E.T.’, foi desenvolvido pelo ex-baterista do Can, Jaki Liebezeit, e também pode ser compreendido como uma estrutura de energia. Um movimento regular controlado, que produz intervalos de tempo inter-relacionados, estáveis e ​​com diminuição do gasto de energia.

‘Groovando’, ou ‘compondo um caminho guia’, todos os envolvidos se sintonizam numa resistência contra determinações arbitrárias em que a música se expande além dos limites estéticos do ‘exótico’ ou noções de folclore. Na verdade, procura tanto quanto possível, prescindir do gosto. Em última análise,quer-se favorecer a experiência de estranheza, deslocamento e não menos importante, liberdade.

Burnt Friedman e Drumming GP procuram desvincular-se dos idiomas culturais (de virtuosismo, auto-expressão ou postura moral, etc.) e, em vez disso, chegar a um modelo abrangente de prática musical transcultural, que seja, na melhor das hipóteses, extático e indutor de transe.

[EN] In 2022 Burnt Friedman and Drumming GP teamed up for a four–piece ensemble performance at the Semibreve festival in Braga and decided to continue with practice and investigation into the nature of groove. While shifting the focus away from cultural connotations of music towards the animating principle and the phenomenological vectors of rhythm, they view ‚groove‘ as the intrinsic attribute of regular harmonic motion patterns.

In an effort of composing a guiding path, they activate a formulaic principle based on the law of the octave (doubling and halving). This non–man–made, unimpeachable natural condition bares a rhythmic formula that is always circular, as opposed to linear and progressive, and solely based on the octave.

Such a formula is derived from a recurrent, balanced body movement from which every impulse originates as something sensed, as opposed to being subject to will or notation. What sounds merely technical or sophisticated in theory turns out to be basal in practice.

This formulaic principle (also known as the ‚E.T.–code’ developed by former Can drummer Jaki Liebezeit) can also be grasped as an energy structure. A controlled regular movement yields stable interrelated time intervals with the least expenditure of energy.

In ‘grooving’, or ‘composing a guiding path’ all those involved become attuned to one another in a resistance against arbitrary dictates in that the music expands beyond aesthetic limits of ‚exotica‘ or notions of folklore. It actually seeks to dispense with taste, ultimately in favour of an experience of strangeness, displacement and not least, freedom.

Burnt Friedman and Drumming GP attempt to dis–associate from cultural idioms (of virtuosity, representation, self-expression or moral posturing, group–think, etc.) and instead arrive at a comprehensive model of trans–cultural music–practice that is at best ecstatic and trance–inducing.

“Semibreve draws to a close with the premiere of a new collaboration between German artist Burnt Friedman and Porto–based percussion ensemble Drumming GP. Friedman’s continuing fascination with the slippage of time within rhythm is explored over an intensely intricate set of organic and electronic instrumentation, lending itself to a groove that is only curtailed by the scheduling programming. There is a sense that these pulses might continue for always, long after the clapping has ceased.”
